Any Australian kitchen designer knows that a lot has changed since the 1970s, but there’s no rule saying you can’t mix some of the old with the new.
Many homeowners find inspiration in kitchen designs from decades past. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and check out a few excellent examples of how kitchens from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s can be juxtaposed against more modern, contemporary designs.
The 1970s
One of the main elements from 70’s kitchens that we are still seeing today is wood cabinetry. Timber cabinets have gotten an upgrade since then, with sleek, modern edges, and lighter colours that elevate the space, compared to the dark and sometimes dingy cabinets of the seventies. While linoleum floors haven’t quite come back in style, 70s-inspired wallpaper or backsplash tiles may be used for a feature wall in a fun and refreshing modern kitchen.
The 1980s
80s kitchens were bright, light and white, and those adjectives apply to today’s kitchen trends too. White kitchens are definitely in style, capitalising on natural light and the opportunity to contrast with beautiful colours like blue, green and yellow. Pantries became popular during this time due to the need for extra space and storage, and today that trend has gone to the next level with luxurious butler’s pantries. U-shaped kitchen designs are still a top choice for small kitchen designs too.
The 1990s
On to the 90s, where we saw all-white appliances and light oak finishes. The kitchen layout often featured an island for added cooking space, which is a must for the majority of modern kitchens today. Minimal, serene vibes were a big hit in the 90s too, with many homeowners taking a “less is more” approach. This concept applies to contemporary kitchen design as well, with open shelving and a few statement centrepieces preferred over cluttered benchtops.
The 2000s
Noughties kitchens featured dark benchtops, white cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances. Most of these trends live on but in a refreshed, more modern way, with luxury appliances and standout benchtops at the top of many homeowner’s dream kitchen wish lists. Quartz, granite, and marble counters come in dramatic dark shades as well as lighter hues to suit any custom bespoke kitchen, while light and airy cabinetry remain a personal preference for many homeowners.
