Highlights From Milan Design Week

Milan Design Week is one of the highlights of the year for interior and industrial designers. Each year brings new design ideas and innovative products from some of the best and most creative designers in the world.

As we do every year, the team here at Kitchens by Kathie kept a close eye on the happenings at the recent 2016 Milan Design Week and would like to share with you, some of the things that caught our attention this year.

Design for compact living

In a time when our homes, particularly in city centres and suburbia, are getting smaller and more compact, clever design is becoming increasingly important. Having a small home shouldn’t mean that you don’t have enough space!

Cleverly designed products intended for compact living spaces were a big feature at Milan Design Week. We particularly love this ‘Bazaar desk’ by Lanzavecchia + Wai for Journey East, a compact writing surface with built-in shelves that can be accessed from both sides of the piece.

KBK Design Tip: When designing in a small space it pays to think multi purpose. In a home that doesn’t have space for a designated study or a desk position some power points at the end of your breakfast bar so that you can plug your laptop in and use the space as a temporary desk. Locate a small cupboard or set of drawers close by to store pens, note paper, chargers and paperwork.

Seamless integration

Appliance cabinets which store and conceal everyday small appliances are a very popular design choice in kitchens right now particularly among clients who desire a streamlined, clutter free space.

Miele’s new ArtLine series of built-in appliances is sure to appeal to those who crave an entirely handle-less kitchen. Touch2open technology allows the user to open the appliances by touching a sensor integrated into the fascia, completely eliminating the need for handles.

KBK Design Tip:  There are many ways in which to achieve a streamlined kitchen either using simples handles or completely handle-less cabinets, all of which our designer are delighted to discuss with out clients. For a crisp and modern look consider selecting appliances that can be fully integrated behind your cabinet doors such as integrated fridges and dishwashers, some of which can even be opened without the need for handles.

Design for children

Design for the little people in our lives is just as important as design for us adults. Children furniture  was a big hit at Milan Design week this year with Kartell launching its first children range.

Our favourite item in the range is this transparent rocking horse designed by Japanese studio Nendo. The design of these rocking horses is based on I beams that are used in building construction – proof that a little bit of imagination can go a long way.

KBK Design Tip: When designing wardrobes in a child’s bedroom try to think ahead. Position hanging rails at a height that children can reach as they get older and more independent. Incorporate some shelving below hanging rails that can be removed as the child grows and their clothes get longer.

Visit our showroom to discuss the design possibilities for your space including kitchens, vanities wardrobes, studies and more. Our design team will work closely with you to design and manufacture fully made to measure cabinetry to perfectly fit your space.
