Your Guide To: Industrial Style Kitchens

Whether you are only tinkering with the idea of an industrial-style kitchen or have your heart set on this utilitarian approach, further defining this style will prove useful in making decisions about your new kitchen design.

The industrial style can be incorporated into your renovation in a myriad of ways, with each interpretation different from the next. We have worked with a large variety of Brisbane spaces and all different styles of home to incorporate distinctive industrial style kitchens our clients love.

If large open spaces and factory or warehouse themes speak to you, then an industrial approach may be the right fit for your new kitchen. Join us as we explore this popular kitchen style and showcase some recently completed Kitchens by Kathie Industrial style renovations to provide examples.

Industrial-Style Kitchen Must Haves
While each interpretation of industrial will vary the design, there are some consistent elements found within this style of kitchen.

  • The first giveaway of an industrial kitchen is the use of a neutral colour palette, often monochromatic and understated.
  • Materials of choice in industrial kitchens are often tough substances. This is why spaces that feature exposed concrete or brick often naturally gravitate towards this kitchen style.
  • You will often see the use of wooden beams and steel such as exposed piping.
  • Industrial style kitchens tend to opt for restaurant-grade appliances that are very industrial looking by nature.

The kinds of elements you most likely will not see in an industrial kitchen include; light colours or pastels of any sort, formal finishing’s, traditional or classical elements, moulding work, intricate details or delicate features.

Case Study 1: Northside Brisbane Industrial Style
Originally a church and community centre, this Northside residence has been lovingly renovated by an enthusiastic young couple into a unique family home. The design brief for this kitchen design was to create a larger than life industrial style kitchen that would not look lost in the enormous 8.3meter wide “assembly hall” area of this unassuming 1950’s suburban home.

The inclusion of a large island that was proportionate to the space was a must have for the family. The collation of different materials, textures and design features in this kitchen blend to create a functional, family-friendly, industrial style kitchen design that feels warm and inviting and entirely at home in its surroundings.

The clients desire for dark charcoal colour cabinetry is softened with the use of the ‘Bluegrass’ colour cabinets under the rough finish solid wood island bench. The sleek black handles on the island contrast the Bluegrass cabinet colour while tying the island in with the handless charcoal colour cabinets on the back wall. With limited above bench wall space, the majority of storage is accommodated in 50-65kg capacity soft closing drawers under deep benchtops maximising the storage potential of the area.

Case Study 2: Streamlined Industrial With New Farm Views

The owners of this executive apartment close to the river at New Farm engaged Kitchens by Kathie to design and build custom cabinetry as part of an extensive renovation of their home. The aim was to optimise storage, functionality and flow without drawing attention from the floor to ceiling panoramic views of Brisbane. The choice of materials and finishes used throughout the cabinetry all work together to create a contemporary look with an industrial feel.

Handless opening cabinetry and floating shelves add to the minimalist and streamlined aesthetic. The use of timber accents and feature lighting add warmth to the matt black cabinetry which boasts finger print resistant technology for easy cleaning. Smoky mirror splashbacks reflect the surrounding skyline views and make the space feel more open, spacious and bright. Light coloured marble look engineered stone benchtops with a sleek 20mm profile help to balance the overall dark colour scheme of the space while the dark marble vein ties in beautify with the dark cabinetry. With supporting walls, unmovable doorways and service pillars to work around, we collaborated closely with our client to design a kitchen, bar area and entertainment unit cabinetry that fulfils all of their needs.

The design was completed with some custom planter boxes that enabled the owner to add some beautiful greenery to their home. The use of the same materials through helps to tie all the areas together creating a cohesive design.

Case Study 3: Exquisite Teneriffe Kitchen and Study

Perched within the classic Teneriffe ‘Woolstores’ Apartments is this modern and unique kitchen / study combination. This exquisite Industrial Style Space is equal parts engaging and enthralling.

A sleek Traceless Black was selected for the cabinetry. Sprawling White Attica Benchtops are used in combination with a matching backsplash. A custom-designed pantry works into the functionality of the space, best utilising the available layout. Solid Spotted Gum was used in the Study which perfectly bridge the gap between kitchen and leads into the living area.

Case Study 4: Captivating Industrial In Carina

This modern and captivating kitchen boasts character at every turn. Working within an angled format, designer, Ebony was able to create a functional and beautiful layout. Polytec ‘Black’ Woodmatt doors and panels are used for the cabinetry to follow a modern industrial theme. The drawers and cupboards are a mix of some bold handles as well as push to open solutions.

Bold matte black and silver tapware is perched above a deep yet narrow sink basin. The hand selected splashback of colourful painted tiles works as an interest point within the kitchen. Open shelves provide the ability to personalise the space, dressing it up with different colours that complement the splashback. 30mm Cesarstone Shitake benchtops finish the look seamlessly.
