This project by designer Anne Ellard is proudly a finalist in the 2020 KBDI Designer Awards.
“Connection and conversation is encouraged through the social arrangement of seating around the expansive island uniting the family through the pleasure of preparing and sharing food” says KBK designer Anne Ellard – a feature that formed the cornerstone of the brief for this new kitchen design for a growing Brisbane family.
Q&A with Designer: Anne Ellard
What was the brief that was put forward to you from the owners of this beautiful Wooloowin home?
I was presented with a brief to create a practical, functional, and social ‘hub of the home’ for a family of 5 with hard-wearing finishes, a natural and bright palette, and a design that would transcend trends.
What was the key to achieving optimum functionality within the space?
A free-flowing design was achieved through the use of zoned work areas and spacious proportioning while the carefully selected timeless palette and quality materials reflect the natural environment ensuring the kitchen works in harmony with the adjoining alfresco area. Clean lines and carefully planned storage, including an easily accessed pocket door appliance cabinet located next to the fridge and close to the alfresco area, help to streamline and declutter the space.
There is such a synergy between the combined use of neutrals and colour in this calming space. What went into selecting the colour palette for this renovation?
Warm-toned timber elements and subtle brass accents add depth and richness that contrast the cooler aesthetic of the concrete floor, white cabinets, and white walls.
Visual and tactile softness is achieved, in a space otherwise filled with hard surfaces, through the combined use of a suede finish stone benchtop, smooth white cabinetry, textured woodgrain, and natural leather.
A natural marble splashback tile in varying shades of muted green is the focal point that draws the eye into the kitchen and creates a further connection with the outdoor space.
The result is an open and bright space that is exactly the oasis the client had dreamed of.
